چکیده
We show that when the gravitational force is correctly calculated in dealing with the vertical hydrostatic equilibrium of black hole accretion disks, the relationship that is valid for geometrically thin disks, i.e., c s /Ω K H = constant, where c s is the sound speed, Ω K is the Keplerian angular velocity, and H is the half-thickness of the disk, does not hold for slim disks. More importantly, by adopting the correct vertical gravitational force in studies of thermal equilibrium solutions, we find that there exists a maximally possible accretion rate for each radius in the outer region of optically thick accretion flows, so that only the inner region of these flows can possibly take the form of slim disks, and strong outflows from the outer region are required to reduce the accretion rate in order for slim disks to be realized.

The nature of the ultraluminous X–ray sources (ULX) is still to be understood. Several hypotheses have been suggested to explain the high X–ray luminosity: stellar mass black holes with emission collimated by relativistic effects or anisotropies in the accretion disk, intermediate mass black holes, young supernovae remnants, background active galactic nuclei. To discriminate among the above hyp...

The physical conditions in the inner parsec of accretion disks believed to orbit the central black holes in active galactic nuclei can be probed by imaging the absorption (by ionized gas in the disk) of background emission from a radio counterjet. We report high angular resolution VLBI observations of the nearby (∼ 40 Mpc) radio galaxy NGC 4261 that confirm free-free absorption of radio emissio...

We discuss plausible mechanisms to produce bullet-like ejecta from the precessing disk in the SS 433 system. We show that non-steady shocks in the subKeplerian accretion flow can provide the basic timescale of the ejection interval while the magnetic rubber-band effect of the toroidal flux tubes in this disk can yield flaring events. We present an overview of our ongoing systematic search for wide (sub)stellar companions around the stars known to host rad-vel planets. By using a relatively large field of view and going very deep, our survey can find all directly detectable stellar and massive brown dwarf companions (m>40 MJup) within a 1000 AU orbit.

We demonstrate that nonlinear decay of obliquely propagating Langmuir waves into another Langmuir and Alfvén waves is possible in a one-dimensional, highly relativistic, streaming, pair plasma. Based on this we present a new mechanism of pulsar radio emission that involves development and quasilinear relaxation of two stream instability, induced scattering of generated Langmuir waves by plasma ...
